QR Codes for Breweries 2026: Tap List Updates Without Reprinting

A craft brewery's tap list is a living document. New kegs go on, seasonal releases come through, collaborations appear for a weekend. A printed tap list is accurate for maybe a week before something changes. Most taprooms deal with this by using chalkboards, which require manual updating, or asking bartenders to memorize what's on and what's not.

Dynamic QR codes solve this more cleanly: one printed code on every table, at the bar, on the menu board stand. The destination is your digital tap list, updated whenever something changes — from any device, in under a minute. Regulars scan to see what's new. First-timers scan to understand the range. The printed code never needs to come down.

This guide covers brewery-specific QR code applications from tap list management to merchandise, taproom loyalty, and tour booking.

The Tap List Problem

Printed tap lists become inaccurate almost immediately. A keg blows Thursday morning; the printed list still shows it Friday evening when the taproom fills up. Bartenders handle dozens of "is the [name] still on?" questions per shift. Customers who came specifically for a seasonal beer get disappointed.

A digital tap list, linked via QR code and updated in real time, eliminates these problems:

Where to update your tap list: Any platform you already use — Untappd (has a public tap list URL feature), a page on your brewery website, a Google Doc, or a dedicated brewery management tool. The QR code links to whichever platform you choose.

Using Untappd: Untappd for Business allows you to maintain a live tap list with ratings, descriptions, and current pour availability. Your public-facing Untappd page has a URL you can use as the QR code destination. When you update the tap list in Untappd, the QR code destination updates automatically.

Table QR Codes: Driving Engagement Between Rounds

A QR code at every table — on a table tent or small frame — serves multiple purposes beyond the tap list:

Secondary uses for table QRs:

A single table QR code can link to a page that bundles all of these — a simple "taproom home page" with sections for tap list, events, merch, and loyalty. Mobile-optimized, updated when needed.

Merchandise and Online Store

Brewery merchandise — pint glasses, growlers, t-shirts, hats, canned beer packs — is often impulse-purchased. A customer sitting in your taproom has just had a great experience. They might buy merchandise in the moment.

A QR code on the table linking directly to your merch page (or to an in-taproom ordering flow) shortens the path from impulse to purchase. This is particularly useful for:

Dynamic codes allow you to update the destination when the featured product changes — from holiday merch to summer cans to your collaboration release — without changing the table signs.

Brewery Tour QR Codes

If you offer tours — guided, self-guided, or by appointment — QR codes are useful in two ways:

1. Booking tours. A QR code on your entrance area signage, on a tour booking flyer, or at the bar linking to your tour reservation system. Simplifies the booking process for walk-in visitors who want to come back for a tour.

2. Self-guided tour information. QR codes placed near fermenting tanks, the canning line, the grain storage area, or the barrel room can link to a page explaining what's happening at each point in the production process. Visitors scan as they walk through. This creates an engaging educational experience without requiring a staff guide for every group.

For self-guided tour codes, static QR codes work fine — the information doesn't change often. For booking codes, use dynamic codes since your booking platform or URL may change.

Taproom Loyalty Programs

Craft brewery loyalty is driven by regulars — the customer who comes in two or three times a month is worth substantially more than the occasional visitor. A loyalty program formalizes that relationship and gives regulars a reason to keep coming back.

A QR code on the table tent or bar card linking to your loyalty signup is one of the lowest-effort ways to grow enrollment:

Tracking loyalty QR performance: With a dynamic code, you see how many scans the loyalty QR generates per week. Compare scan-to-signup conversion rates if your loyalty platform tracks referrals from specific links.

Taproom Events Promotion

Taproom events — trivia nights, live music, release parties, pairing dinners — are major revenue drivers. A QR code on permanent taproom signage linking to your current events calendar keeps customers informed without requiring updated printed signage for every event.

Update-without-reprinting use case: One printed sign near the entrance: "What's on this weekend? Scan to find out." The linked page (your website events page, Eventbrite, Facebook events, or your own calendar) is updated as events are scheduled. The printed sign stays permanent.

This is significantly cheaper than printing new event flyers for every weekly event. The cost of the sign (printed once) + the QR code ($20/year) replaces ongoing print marketing for events that live primarily on digital channels anyway.

Tracking Scan Data by Day and Location

For breweries with multiple taproom locations or satellite bars, separate QR codes per location provide useful operational data:

Even for a single-location brewery, weekly scan data on your tap list QR tells you something about customer curiosity. If scans spike on Saturday afternoons but are minimal on weekdays, your weekend crowd is more exploratory — more likely to try new things rather than ordering their regular.

Packaging QR Codes

If you can your beer for distribution (either self-distributed or through a distributor), cans are a significant marketing surface. A QR code on the can links to:

For canned beer QR codes, use a dynamic code and plan for permanence. A canning label design may run for 6–12 months before the next design revision. Any URL change during that window would break a static code. A dynamic code can be updated from the dashboard.

Note on can design: The QR code on a can competes with a lot of visual information. Give it dedicated space, adequate contrast (black on a light background within the label design), and a minimum of 0.8 inches square at label dimensions.

Getting Started

A practical first setup for a taproom:

  1. Create your digital tap list. If you're on Untappd for Business, you already have one. Otherwise, a simple web page or Google Doc works.
  2. Create a dynamic QR code at TwoDollarQR linking to your tap list. $20/year.
  3. Print table tents. A simple 4×6 card with the QR code and "Scan for current tap list" text. Print from home or order from a local shop.
  4. Place at every table and at the bar. Mount or stand up the cards.
  5. Update the tap list whenever something changes. Takes 60 seconds.

Expand from there: a second code for your events calendar ($20/year), a third for merch ($20/year). Three codes, $60/year, covering the most important customer touchpoints in your taproom.

Dynamic QR codes fit the brewery model well because the content changes constantly and the physical signage needs to be permanent. The separation of "physical code" from "digital content" is exactly what a tap list with rotating beers requires.
